A Truelove Story By Amanda Sorena

Over two years ago, The Story Houston sent over an army of people to volunteer to muck out our house after we flooded during Hurricane Harvey. From the moment the water entered our home, we knew that our lives were forever changed. At the time, we saw God at work through the people who helped us and lifted us up. But God didn’t want to just use this event to teach us about true gratitude, humbleness, and how inconsequential our material things really are. Oh no. His plans for our entire family were bigger than we ever imagined. On day two, our volunteers showed up, and I looked around and took notice all of the young men from church that were working so hard in our home. I picked up my phone and called my younger, single sister. “Kaitlin, there are a lot of guys here. They are all from church. [...]

This Church Will Always be Home by Jody Jackson

There never was any doubt about what church I would attend when I graduated from the University of Texas in 1953 and came to work in Houston. While I looked for roommates and a place to live, I stayed with longtime family friend Grace Bethea (who later married Joe Ross) and her mother, Fannie. It just happened that Grace was St. Luke's Director of Christian Education at that time, so of course, it was understood that I would join this church.Grace steered me to the big room on the third floor where the church's young single's class met, and I began a journey that has lasted over 65 years. It is no doubt difficult for today's young adults to realize that there was a time when not every young single owned a car, but it's true--and I was one who did not. So when a class party was announced, I called [...]

My St. Luke’s Story by Kaye LaVerne Sisk Hardy

I grew up in a loving Baptist family in Small-Town Texas. After college, I came to Houston and joined River Oaks Baptist Church, where I belonged to a singles Sunday School class, until I met my future husband, John. John’s parents had helped start St. Lukes when it was meeting at Lamar High School. I figured there was no way I’d make a Baptist out of him, so the next Sunday after we married, I joined St.Lukes. We joined the Friendship Class, “young” married, who were mostly graduates of the Brunchers class. (This group of singles was disbanded by Dr. Moore, presumably because they met during the sermon. That’s a shame because it fulfilled a need.) Members of Friendship Class were over 30 and having our first children. I belonged to a group that went out and served, and I gave a ride to a lady who lived on my way [...]

From the family of Dr. James W. Moore

Dearest Friends, The James W. Moore family has been blessed, beyond measure, during the 22 years (1984-2006) that we were privileged to serve with the wonderful members and friends at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Also, it was our pleasure to be there for the delightful and meaningful 50th-year anniversary celebration.  Then just ten years later, St. Luke’s UMC got to celebrate another decade, with the lovely 60th anniversary and birthday party.  Both events were celebrated in the Fellowship Hall, which was filled with lots of love and laughter. Congratulations on your 75th anniversary!  We wish God’s abundant blessings for Houston’s beacon St. Luke’s United Methodist Church now and in the many exciting years ahead.  What a tremendous future! Most gratefully, June Moore, Jodi and Jeff

My Faith Journey by Jack Browder

My faith journey is boring and uneventful compared to that of many members of St. Luke’s.  I was born a Methodist in Groesbeck with Methodist parents and Methodist grandparents and great grandparents on my father’s side.  When my parents moved the family to Pecos in west Texas during the summer after my first grade, my parents joined the First Methodist church and I and my two siblings and another sibling born in Pecos joined the church after each completed the confirmation class.  Growing up we all went to church and the children also went to Sunday School.  My parents were very involved in the church and my father was on the board of stewards including a term as chairman. After high school, I went to the University of Texas in Austin.  As is the case for many college students, finding a church and attending regularly was not a high priority. The [...]
