November 17: Posture of the Heart

Joseph Patty, Associate Director of Student Ministries Matthew 15:1-9, 18, 22-28 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been [...]

November 16: Boldly Praise God!

2020-11-16T10:31:17-06:00November 16th, 2020|All blogs, Daily Devotionals|0 Comments

Rev. Cliff Ritter  Psalm 150:6 “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!” Reflection: The final word from our Book of Hebrew poetry gives us a clear imperative. In all things, and in all ways, at every opportunity, we are to praise the Lord. Indeed, to praise the LORD is to place a spiritual exclamation mark on our worship. It is our opportunity to declare our love for God, an opportunity to shout, or sing, or dance our highest form of exaltation before God. So long as we have breath in our lungs, we are to give God all [...]

November 13: Playing Hide-and-Seek with God

By Louise McEvoy, Women's Ministry Coordinator Isaiah 29:13, 15-16 (VOICE) Eternal One: 13 These people think they can draw near to Me by saying the right things,         by honoring Me with their lips, but their hearts are far away from Me.     Their worship of Me consists of man-made traditions learned by rote;         it is a meaningless sham. 15 Oh, it’ll be bad for those of you who conceal your thoughts from the Eternal,     who do your deeds in the dark and say: “Who sees us? Who knows what we are doing?” 16 My goodness, how you’ve turned things around! [...]

St. Luke’s 75th Anniversary Celebration

2020-11-13T09:17:17-06:00November 13th, 2020|All blogs, Inside-Out with Dr. Tom Pace|0 Comments

A PERSONAL PRAYER God of Grace and God of Glory, I stand in awe of the way you as the Holy Spirit have worked, breathing life in and through St. Luke’s church for the past 75 years. I looked again at the pictures of those early days – women in hats and men in fashionably short ties, all full of dreams and hopes and visions. Children with white gloves and Sunday School teachers standing tall and beaming beside them. But I suspect even they had no idea what you had in mind for this particular community of followers of your [...]

A Family Project – Ron Fisher’s Story

For St. Luke's member Ron Fisher, an usher at both the 9:45 and 11 AM traditional services, our greatly admired main sanctuary was truly a "family affair".  Ron's father Louis and uncle Fred co-owned Fisher Construction Company which built our beautiful sanctuary. In addition, much of the lovely stone and brickwork for the sanctuary was thanks to the master craftsmanship of Louis and Fred's brothers, Paul and Ed.  Before heading to SMU for college, even Ron's younger brother Bob worked on this important "family" project, laying brick inside the steeple.  Bob, who later earned a PhD in Biomedical Electrical Engineering, was always [...]

The year was 2008. It was late summer, and I had just finished taking the Bar Exam when I got a call. “How would you feel about being my ‘consigliere’?” It was Rev. Justin Coleman. Rev. Coleman had been a mentor/friend since he was an associate director at the SMU Wesley Foundation while I was in undergrad. It was an ‘offer I couldn’t refuse’ (can you tell that Rev. Coleman and I share an affinity for the Godfather films?).Let’s back up. After graduating SMU and returning to Houston in 2005, my future wife, Ashley, and I were busy at work [...]

Chrissie Prichard, member since 2007, Outreach Council member Psalm 1:1-2 (NIV) “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” Colossians 3:16 (CEB) “The word of Christ must live in you richly. Teach and warn each other with all wisdom by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” Reflection: Reading the Bible has never [...]

Amy Kelley, Director of Program Ministries, Gethsemane Titus 3:1-8 (CEB) 1 Remind them to submit to rulers and authorities. They should be obedient and ready to do every good thing. 2 They shouldn’t speak disrespectfully about anyone, but they should be peaceful, kind, and show complete courtesy toward everyone. 3 We were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, and slaves to our desires and various pleasures too. We were spending our lives in evil behavior and jealousy. We were disgusting, and we hated other people. 4 But “when God our savior’s kindness and love appeared, 5 he saved us because of [...]
